2012 call for submissions: photography

SUBMISSION DEADLINE : Friday, March 23, 2012

ELIGIBILITY : The competition is open to anyone 19 years of age or older, residing in Ontario.

CATEGORIES : There are two categories for the 2012 photography competition: Professional (paid photographer) and Amateur (hobbyist). A grand prize will be awarded for the top submission in each category.

ENTRY FEES : There are no fees to enter this competition.

PHOTOGRAPHY THEMES : This is an environmental film and arts festival; photographs must creatively demonstrate a message pertaining to our earth. Photographs will be judged based on composition, strength and clarity of message, adherence to technical and artistic guidelines, creativity and originality.

The 2012 theme: Photographs may reflect positive or negative environmental aspects and should present a unique perspective of the planet. Photographs may have been taken at any time.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES : Each photographer is permitted to submit a maximum of three photographs. Digital files are required; all photographs must be submitted by email. Digital images must be no longer than 800 pixels on the longest side and saved as jpegs in RGB format. Each file must not exceed 4MB.

Digital manipulation is acceptable.

There will be a preliminary round, whereby the jury will select the top submissions for the shortlist.
Photographers must have a large master file(10 mega pixels or higher) of each submitted image, suitable for printing, should the image be selected for the shortlist. A large printed photograph of each shortlisted image is required for hanging at the Photography Awards Night. Photographs must be of high quality, cannot be smaller than 11×14 inches and must not exceed 30×40 inches in size.

The shortlist will be announced Friday, March 30, 2012.

THE JUDGING PROCESS : During the preliminary round, obvious factors will instantly eliminate an image from the competition, such as the main subject being out of focus, blown-out highlights, poor compositions, or bad exposures. The jury is seeking fresh images that reflect each photographer’s unique talents. Images should be shot on 10 mega pixels or higher.

USE OF IMAGES : Copyright and all other rights remain that of the photographer. Any photograph used by the ECOScene Film & Arts Festival shall carry the photographer’s credit line. Use may include publication in any festival media sponsor publication.
All entrants understand that any image submitted to the competition may be used by the ECOScene Film & Arts Festival for marketing and promotional purposes directly related to the competition, including exhibitions, and print and digital media. Monetary compensation will not be provided.

By winning or placing in the competition, photographers consent to have their images displayed or promoted through the ECOScene Film & Arts Festival website or marketing materials.

BEST OF SHOW : The shortlisted images will be exhibited at the Photography Awards Night. Friday, April 13, 2011. Prizes from the ECO Artist Program and community sponsors will be announced and awarded that evening.

Finalists must submit their images framed, preferably matted, sized between 11×14 inches and 30×40 inches. Framed images must be completed no later than Thursday April 5, 2012. Failure to do this will result in disqualifcation.

SUBMISSION PROCESS : By submitting images to the 2012 ECOScene Film & Arts Festival, photographers agree to abide by the festival submission guidelines and certify that they are legally authorized to submit these images. Entrants must not infringe on the rights of any other photographer.

  • Photography submissions must be uploaded to our Flickr account (If you don’t have a Flickr account set up is free at: www.flickr.com).
  • A short description of the message behind your photograph must accompany your image.
  • EcoScene Film and Arts Festival reserves the right to remove or deny entry to any photographs, including any photographs that do not reflect the theme or may be offensive or deflamatory.
  • Once your image(s) are uploaded please send an image title, contact name, address and phone number via our Flickr email. The submission deadline is Friday March 23, 2012. Confirmation emails will be returned upon receipt of this information.
  • Each submitted image should have a name/title.
  • Photographers must indicate whether they are entering the professional or amateur category.
